Cerebral Palsy

Down Syndrome

This protocol strengthens the muscles and teaches the brain how to perform functional mobility activities such as sitting, standing, and eventually walking. This method has been proven to achieve improvements faster than traditional therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The TheraSuit Method is an intensive therapy approach that uses a specialized soft dynamic orthotic suit and Universal Exercise Unit (spider cage) to help children with neurological disorders improve their motor function. The suit provides external stabilization and proprioceptive input, allowing children to achieve positions and movements they couldn't perform independently. Combined with intensive exercises, it helps retrain the brain and body to develop better alignment, strength, and motor control.

  • Traditional therapy typically consists of 1-2 sessions per week for 30-60 minutes. Intensive therapy provides 2-4 hours of focused treatment daily, 3-5 days per week, over a concentrated period of up to 4 weeks. This frequency allows for rapid skill acquisition, neuroplasticity benefits from repetitive practice, and the ability to build upon progress from session to session before regression occurs. It's particularly effective for children who have plateaued in traditional therapy or need accelerated progress toward specific goals.

  • Intensive therapy may benefit children with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, genetic disorders, traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions affecting motor function. Ideal candidates include those who have plateaued in weekly therapy, need rapid progress toward functional goals, are preparing for or recovering from surgery, require strengthening or postural control training, or need focused preparation for developmental milestones. A comprehensive evaluation determines if the intensive program is appropriate for your child's specific needs and goals.

  • Each intensive session is 2-4 hours and combines Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy interventions. Sessions include: warm-up and stretching, strengthening exercises using the TheraSuit and Universal Exercise Unit, functional skill training targeting your child's specific goals, balance and coordination activities, and cool-down exercises. Activities are individualized based on your child's evaluation and goals, with scheduled breaks to prevent fatigue. Progress is monitored daily and the program is adjusted as needed.

  • Results vary by individual, but many families report lasting improvements in strength, function, and independence. To maintain and continue progress, most children benefit from follow-up traditional weekly therapy to reinforce skills learned during the intensive block. We provide a comprehensive home exercise program and recommendations for ongoing therapy to help sustain the gains achieved. Some families choose to participate in periodic intensive blocks (e.g., annually or bi-annually) to continue advancing toward new goals.

  • Please bring: comfortable, form-fitting clothing for your child (leggings and fitted t-shirt work well), athletic shoes with good support, water bottle and snacks for breaks, any orthotics or assistive devices your child currently uses, and a positive attitude! We provide the TheraSuit and all therapy equipment. Parents are encouraged to observe sessions and learn techniques to practice at home.

  • Program costs vary based on session length, frequency, and duration. We provide detailed pricing during your initial consultation. Some insurance plans may cover intensive therapy services - we can provide documentation and superbills for you to submit to your insurance company. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before starting to understand your coverage. Payment plans may be available - please discuss financial options during your consultation.

  • The first step is scheduling an initial consultation and evaluation. During this visit, our therapists will assess your child's current abilities, discuss your goals, review medical history, and determine if intensive therapy is appropriate. If accepted into the program, we'll work with you to schedule your intensive block based on availability. Spots are limited, so we encourage families to reach out early to secure preferred dates.
